If at first you don’t succeed, try again.
At face value, this movie is a soft reboot of Suicide Squad (2016). The major characters have the same archetypes as the previous movie (Black gunslinger lead in it for his children, a monster man, an occult girl, Harley Quinn, and one ACTUAL team member with powers).
Where this movie has success is with keeping the story self-contained without trying to tie-in other DCEU movies. It still fails in the pacing and plot however, with multiple time-skips going forward and backward. That shit screams bad writing, even if, like the slapstick violence reminiscent of Invincible, it is straight out of a comic book.
Overall, a surprisingly good DC movie from James Gunn. He does the ensemble teams justice.
