IMDB: Four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities take fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.

This was a boring movie that didn’t fully utilize the acting ranges of the main case. Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki all play stereotypes of their previous typecast appearances (bitchy Black woman, angry Latin woman, sofisticated European bimbo) when in 2018, each of these women were nominated for various best and supporting actress roles.

I watched of course for Debicki, and she plays a battered woman who turns to prostitution to pay the bills after her husband dies. Why? Because it fit the stereotype. Davis was married to the criminal leader Liam Neeson, and lost a biracial son to the Chicago police. Why? because it fit the stereotype. Rodriguez was married to a gambler and has 3 kids. Why? Because it fit the stereotype. See where I’m going with this?

In addition, theres a political angle w/ Irish aldermen losing an incumbent election to Black gangsters. Why is there a political angle? I have no idea. The Widows are not involved until the end of the movie. Whoever wrote this was attempting to make a social statement for no reason and didn’t properly link the plot outside of some flimsy MacGuffins.

That said, lot of views of the south side and Hyde Park areas of Chicago. Only thing saving this movie from a solid D.

First screened April 9, 2023 on Amazon Prime.
