Not nearly as bad as people have made it out to be. Highlights are Ms. Marvel and ANY interaction she has with the other cast. She’s just oozing with charisma. Biggest problem is that Brie Lawson can’t fucking act — holy shit. She’s worse than the public’s perception of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Baseline Marvel action and baseline Marcel plot and motivations with a villain of the week. Additionally, Nick Fury was neutered and is now the old black mentor trope… ugh. The timeline in comparison to the TV shows is out of sync. It’s after Ms. Marvel and Secret Invasion… but no mention of the events from those shows. You have to assume knowledge of the Khan family (Kamela Khan/Ms. Marvel) and since I only watched episode 1 of that series I gathered what I could from my comic book knowledge of the character.

There’s one horrible sequence in the film that downgraded this from B+ to B-. On one planet, Captain Marvel married a prince there, but their language is song… What’s the point of a language of song in a 100 min film?? A language of metaphor I get, because there was a 50min Star Trek episode EXPLAINING IT, but 2–4 scenes in a 100 min movie doesn’t suffice. Also, why is there lip syncing??? It’s just sooo out of place in a Marvel movie. But not in a Disney movie.

In conclusion, this wasn’t a solo Ms. Marvel movie because of the bad ratings from the Disney+ series and the producers didn’t think she could carry it alone. Additionally we already know Captain Marvel alone cant carry a movie solo, so why not connect an open plot line from the first movie to start decommissioning the character? Make no mistake here, they are moving away from Captain Marvel as the Superman equivalent in the MCU and that’s probably a good thing since the actress doesn’t even enjoy it.
