This horror-comedy subverts your expectations surrounding the classic cabin in the woods scenario, by manipulating the tropes that we come to expect from a similar story.
Tropes like… the final girl, zombies, staying together in a group vs being picked off 1 by 1, the bimbo/slut, the jock, and the nerd. Scenarios include driving to a cabin for a weekend of fun, going into the basement of the cabin, driving away from the cabin only to be thwarted by an unknown force. It’s real meta and real good. No problem with the acting, the actors all knew what was expected of them.
Eventually there is an allusion toward Lovecraftian creatures (The Ancient Ones) being the ultimate antagonists of the film, perfect conclusion and reference connecting it to all of horrordom.
