I’ve watched both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz around 50 times minimum. During the 2008 recession those were one of my go-to comfort movies.
As the years go by, I’ve also come to realize it is a perfect Gen X and Gen Y satire of survival horror movies that take place in a metropolitan city. This is what Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright excel at (see Spaced).
Take Night of the Living Dead, 28 Days Later, Evil Dead 2. Mix them up. Add British situational humor with a critique on unbridled capitalism. Blend well. Serve while inebriated.
- Pacing? Perfect.
- Script and Dialogue? Perfect.
- Technical Aspects? Perfect.
- Story and Immersion? Perfect.
Literally my only complaint keeping this from an S grade is the limited amount of minorities people across the narrative. Pakistanis are present, around 5 Black men are present but don’t have lines. There’s a shit-ton of immigrants in London and a LOT of British media don’t represent the proper diversity of the metro.
