How did the 2008 recession actually turn out for millennials?
Really shit. Dating? Fucked. Job prospects? Fucked. But the women kept going along not worrying about finances, continued to have babies while the men struggled and scrounged around. Personified best in this season of Peep Show!
After Mark’s position at JLB was made redundant, he’s shown to have dipped into his savings in order to survive. Since he’s a Brit, we can also assume some level of social services were provided. Sophie’s child is Mark’s and she expects him to provide 50–50 financially, thus he floats from helping Hans w/ sidejobs, to attempting to be a history tour guide to finally having a stable position as waiter at a Mexican restaurant. The dream.
Jeremy isn’t shown making a whole lot of money or continuing to make music. Presumably from previous season his inheritance is also gone. How is he surviving and buying weed from his crush Elena every day? Something we never get answered.
Anyway, the id/ego dichotomy is further reinforced as the superego (Hans) only appears when Mark and Jeremy have significant life decisions to undertake. Kind of sad in the end though, Jeremy endured an unrequited love with a lesbian (Elena). But was it really love, or a relationship built on pure sexual compatibility? It doesn’t matter because at the end of the day he more than likely ruined her life.
That’s what the 2008–2012 was like. People’s lives ruined day-in and day-out, teetering toward hopelessness, but remaining resilient. The human condition.
Rescreened weeks of September 24, and October 1 2023 on Tubi.
