Obi-Wan Kenobi, C

The miniseries that we didn’t ask for or need.

Pretty hard to review without spoiling so I won’t. Just want to address the high points:

  • Moses Ingram as Third Sister/Inquisitor. Great actress, would have been a more appreciated in the MCU to replace Letitia Wright.
  • Indira Varma as Rebel spy. She’s in a lot of shit as a character actress, and the time she was in the story was perfect.
  • Vivien Lyra Blair as lil’ Leia. I hated how she was written initially, and then she grew on me.
  • The last episode.

Low points:

  • As mentioned by Red Letter Media, the budget is really small. Most of the money is spent on lightsaber SFX and space CGI. The camera quality is inconsistent as well.
  • Obi-Wan’s character arc. Can’t go into much without spoiling it… but it’s been established that Midichlorian count influences your connection to The Force…
  • Linking the miniseries to both the prequels and the original movies. We don’t need Vader to justify Obi-Wan. The Clone Wars cartoon allowed him to exist without Anakin. No other part of the Star Wars IP does. Really frustrating.
  • Choosing to not use deep fake technology when relevant… again, spoilers so not going further. Compare against The Book of Boba Fett.

Ultimately, there’s really only 3 episodes that Star Wars fans need to see out of the 6 episode miniseries. Disney is also planning a theatrical cut of the series. Pretty self-explanatory that instead of budgeting for a movie, Disney cheaped out. I’d actually grade a 2 hour theatrical cut with a B/B+ based on the editing.

Viewed weekly, completing on Disney+ June 24, 2022.
