Scarlett Johansson is Tetsuo from Akira.

I’ve definitely seen this before. Took me 10 minutes to realize it, but definitely saw it before. So a Korean crime syndicate needs drug mules for a synthetic drug developed in Taiwan. Lucy (Johansson) gets unwillingly involved and has the drugs surgically implanted. Meanwhile, Morgan Freeman is narrating a lecture in Paris about human evolution. The plots connect because this drug causes the user to unlock their brainpower.

Along the way Lucy gets superpowers like telekinesis, telepathy, x-ray vision, matter rearrangement. Straight out of Akira, but the writer didn’t understand the film.

First time watching was great. Now? Pretty horrible. Just a whole mishmash of visuals and psychobabble. Oil and vinegar with a pretty face.

Rescreened September 8, 2024 on Netflix.
