When the fish die, all that’s left is the city.
A short film about an overbearing Nigerian brother trying to protect his sister’s chastity that also serves as a metaphor with the worldwide phenomenon of rural escape to urban areas.
His sister is young and nieve, being taken advantage of because of her body, while he is middle-aged and chiseled from working hard in Lagos. He realizes the big city will eat her alive, and wants the best for his family.
Film could use a bit more direction to guide the sister’s acting, and not use the stock film grain filter in Davinci Resolve, but overall a good quick watch. The film was directed by Chuko Esiri and I’ll be screening all of his films during the month.
First screened April 4, 2024 on Criterion Collection.
