When Bollywood creates a Disney movie with a twist of Chinese epic and a dash of Game of Thrones.
Recommended to me by at least two people, the Hindi version isn’t even the original dubbing, Telugu is (suspiciously missing on Netflix). There are also dubbings in Tamil, Malay and English, all with English subtitles.
Baahubali is the title character and Disney-esque protagonist. Around 3–4 stories make the bulk of the movie, each focused on another secondary character (his adopted mother, his crush aka the Disney princess, his real mother, and his evil brother).
Lots of songs, lots of CGI and lots of “wire-fu”. Lots of classism, and unintentional racism as well (the Disney princess character gets white skin for her beautification scenes, Baahubali constantly gets mud and dirt thrown on him to lower his standing).
Overall, met expectations. The dubbing bugged me though, so full grade docked for that.
First viewing June 6, 2021 on Netflix.
