Never saw the entirety of the movie before. I’ve seen clips and understand the pop-culture references, but… yeah, first screening.

Positives: The movie holds up relatively well for 1962. Technical aspects are amazing. This is why you shoot on film. Sound design and narrative are on point as well.

Negatives: The pacing of the movie in general is off. Seems to flow like a direct adaptation of a book, which it was. In 1962, this was par for the course. There’s some overt racism and sexism in parts. Of course this was before the PC era began in the late 80s.

Finally I wish that Dr. No was never killed off. Throughout the Bond series SPECTRE is always there. Dr. No could have been the Thanos of the MI7 universe instead of a Saturday morning villain.

The show where the careers of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross began to rise toward stardom.

This little show is frequently forgotten when people talk about the golden age of sketch comedy in the early-mid 90s. Influenced by improv clubs, the main hook is that Bob and David play a fictional representation of themselves weaving in pre-recorded scenes and filming crowd reactions. A departure from the stage act formats from In Living Color, Mad TV and Saturday Night Live.

The show’s alumni was relatively limited in the first season and with only 4 episodes, as a viewer you quickly learn that the entire concept is an experiment that was enhanced in later seasons.

Re-watched over May 13–15, 2022 weekend on HBO Max.

Philippine take on the Death Wish scenario.

Take a bunch of unknown/B-movie actors, wrap them around a rape-revenge plot and film it in the Philippines during the 80s, and you have Blood Debts. The film is mostly average and unremarkable outside of the ending… so I’ll save you the trouble:

Surprisingly solid Hong Kong film from 1986 that wasn’t directed or choreographed by Jackie Chan.

Starring Yuen Biao and Cynthia Rothrock, the action is grounded and without elaborate set pieces. Young Cynthia Rothrock steals the show again and is clearly a martial arts prodigy that somehow got typecast when she left Hong Kong. Yuen Biao is a prosecutor fed up with losing cases and turns vigilante, and Rothrock is brought in to investigate some murders and take him down. Unfortunately there’s a dirty cop in the Police Department hell bent on maintaining his own power.

Minor sub-plot with a subordinate being trained under Rothrock that leads to a cycle of death. The officer didn’t need to die to increase the stakes, a better writer would have found a different plot point to tug.

Archetype of a perfect movie encapsulating the new American ideology.

No longer is it “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” but “you only live once”.

The movie is the perfect length with perfect actors and perfect dialogue. Normally, I’d detract some for lack of minority people, but nobody wants to live in North Dakota and there’s a Native American central to the plot.

The movie delves into the selfishness of the main character syndrome Americans have moved toward. Is a period piece immortalizing small town America. Has many mundane plot points that opened up a new cinematic universe (see Fargo TV series) before Marvel.

There’s nothing wrong with the movie, watch it sometime.
